MPD To Honor 28 Fallen Police Officers

Today, the Montgomery Police Department will pay tribute to 28 fallen police officers and recognize the service of current officers at the annual Police Memorial Day Service.  Montgomery Police Chief Ernest Finley and Mayor Todd Strange will place a wreath on the Police Memorial.  An awards luncheon will be held this afternoon at the Renaissance Convention Center.

Men Released

The three men convicted of setting fires to churches in west and central Alabama more than eight years ago have been released from state prison facilities.  Alabama Corrections Officials say 29-year-old Benjamin Moseley, was freed Wednesday morning at the Childersburg Work Center.  Two other accomplices, 29-year-old Matthew Cloyd was released from a youth center in late March.  A third male, 30-year-old Russell Debusk was released early from state prison in 2012.  Moseley, Cloyd and Debusk were each sentenced in connection with a series of nine church fires in Bibb, Greene, Pickens and Sumter counties that occurred in February 2006.

Minority Business

Minority businesses have a harder time getting bank loans than small companies in general, according to a survey released by Wells Fargo and the polling company Gallup.  The survey found most business owners don't struggle to get credit, but it also shows disparities between the borrowing experiences reported by minorities and by small-business owners in general.

Credit Settlement

Alabama will receive more than $137,000 in a multistate settlement over a dispute about credit reporting errors.  Attorney General Luther Strange announced settlement with national credit reporting agencies Equifax, Experian and Transunion.  The settlement requires the agencies to move more quickly to fix disputed information on credit reports, wait longer before adding items and more carefully scrutinize certain data they're furnished with by collection agencies and others.
