Housing Options

Montgomery-based Foshee Design and Construction has recently built two low-cost homes in west Montgomery that promise to fit more comfortably into the average budget.  These homes can be purchased for about $75,000.  Dan Beeker with Foshee says buyers have a great deal of options when deciding where they want they want their home built.  The two Lo-Co homes in west Montgomery were built on land donated by Freewill Missionary Baptist Church in an effort to provide low-cost options for people in the community.

Leadership Change

Alabama Labor Commissioner Tom Surtees is stepping down after a decade of leading major state agencies for two governors.  Surtees was hired as state revenue commissioner in 2004 by Gov. Bob Riley.  Then he moved to the Department of Industrial Relations in 2007.  He remained in the post when Gov. Robert Bentley took office in 2011, and he became labor commissioner when the departments of Industrial Relations and Labor were merged under Bentley.   The 64-year-old commissioner says he has loved his job because it makes a difference in people's lives.

Abortion Clinic Closing

The only abortion clinic in north Alabama is expected to close within a week.  Officials at the Alabama Women's Center said Tuesday that they'd rather close voluntarily than be faced with a state intervention.  The clinic was faced with a July 1st deadline to bring its facility up to code as a surgical treatment center.  Administrators submitted blue prints for a new location to the state Department of Public Health, but the department's Deputy General Counsel Brian Hale says the facility's blueprint haven't been approved yet.  Hale says state officials are waiting to hear from the clinic's architect about plans for the facility's interior.
