Montgomery's 7th Annual Diversity Summit

Diversity in the workplace will be discussed at length during today's annual summit sponsored by the Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce.  Speakers from some of the nation's best-known companies, government agencies and education sectors will weigh in on a variety of topics.  Pat Harris, the Global Chief Diversity Officer at McDonald's Corporation, is among today's keynote speakers.  Harris said America's workforce has redefined itself over the past three decades.  The summit is being held at the Renaissance Hotel in downtown Montgomery.

Mayors Meeting

The mayors of Alabama's five largest cities met Monday in Montgomery.  The leaders shared ideas and discussed presenting a united front at the next legislative session.  Birmingham Mayor William Bell says together the mayors represent 50 percent of the state when metropolitan areas are included.  All the mayors agreed that infrastructure, job creation, public safety and education are the most pressing issues their cities face.  Montgomery Mayor Todd Strange hosted the gathering.  Huntsville and Tuscaloosa were also represented.

Harris Tributes

The sudden death of a talented high school football player still reverberates in Pike County and surrounding communities.  Tributes continue to pour in for 17-year-old Demario Harris Jr.  The senior defensive back for Charles Henderson High School collapsed last Friday during a game against Davidson High School.  The teen died Sunday morning from a brain hemorrhage.  Teammates and students will gather in front of the school Friday morning and release balloons in Harris' memory.  Funeral arrangements have not been announced.

Murder Conviction Upheld

A state appeals court has upheld the murder conviction of a Montgomery man found guilty in connection with a fatal shooting in August of 2011.  21-year-old Chandler Boone was sentenced to 50 years in prison for killing Jederico Langford in the Gibbs Village neighborhood in west Montgomery.  Court records showed Boone shot Langford multiple times with a Glock pistol, then bragged about the killing to others.  Chandler Boone was convicted in August of last year.
