Montgomery Violators Ticketed for Parking on Lawns

Montgomery, Alabama –
(AP) - Officials say city inspectors have
ticketed 85 people in the first eight days of enforcing a new
Montgomery ordinance against parking cars in the front yard.
The $50 fines can be appealed but photos of the violations are
kept on file and will be shown to municipal court judges who hear
contested cases.
Montgomery officials said the goal is not to raise revenue but
to discourage people from parking in front yards.
City Councilman Charles Smith sponsored the ordinance and said
he's already seeing fewer violations in his district.
There was a month long warning period before the ordinance took
effect June 1 and enforcement began on June 3. Inspectors will
begin using electronic ticket machines this week.
