Democratic Caucus

The Reverend Jesse Jackson says he and other civil rights group will focus their attention on Shelby County, Alabama.  Last year, U.S. Supreme Court struck down two key provisions of the Voting Rights Act that were challenged by the Shelby County Commission.  Reverend Jackson said that has resulted in a pattern of re-segregation across the South.  Jackson said by removing Section Four protection from the Voting Rights Act, the U.S. Supreme Court, in effect, gutted voting rights protections and the influence of minority voters.

The World Boxing Council heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder visited the Alabama Senate Thursday.  A resolution was passed by the senators honoring the achievements of the Tuscaloosa native.  Wilder won the WBC championship in January of this year and also won the bronze medal for the U.S. at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.  Wilder says he hopes his experience is an inspiration to others.
