Montgomery Street Closings for Historic March

All the preparations have been made, and now the city of Montgomery is ready to commemorate the final leg of the 50th anniversary of the Selma to Montgomery Voting Rights March.  The city has announced street closings along the march route.  Oak Street between Fairview Avenue and West Jefferson Davis Avenue.  West Jefferson Davis Avenue between Oak and South Holt Street.  South Holt Street between West Jefferson Davis Avenue and Day Street.  Day Street from Holt Street to Mobile Street.  Mobile Street to Five Points, Montgomery Street to Dexter Avenue and all of Dexter Avenue.

Freedom Rally

The annual celebration of the Stars for Freedom rally attracted a large crowd Tuesday at the City of St. Jude in Montgomery.  The event honors the marchers who arrived at the same location 50 years ago Tuesday as part of the Selma to Montgomery Voting Rights March.

Adoption Agencies

An Alabama lawmaker wants to make sure that faith-based adoption agencies can refuse to place children with same-sex couples.  Republican Sen. Gerald Allen of Tuscaloosa introduced the bill specifying groups that could refuse to participate in adoptions and foster care placements that violate their religious beliefs.  The bill would also prohibit the state from refusing to license, or renew a contract with, the groups for refusing services to people on religious grounds.  Eric Johnston, an attorney who worked on the bill, says the legislation protects the religious freedom of the groups which have a church affiliation.  The director of the Human Rights Campaign says the bill opens the door to discrimination against a diverse array of families who are seeking to adopt needy children.

Ice Cream Recall

Alabama agriculture officials are checking the recall of several Blue Bell Ice Cream products after the company discovered a potential Listeria contamination.  Alabama agriculture officials said in a statement Tuesday that single-serving cups of chocolate, strawberry and vanilla have been recalled across 23 states after a cup in Kansas tested positive for Listeria.  Officials say they're checking whether any of the recalled products are being served in Alabama.
