By Montgomery school system facing layoffs, money woes
Montgomery, AL – - Montgomery's school superintendent says
the system may need to lay off 400 employees to deal with a
shortage of funds.
Superintendent Barbara Thompson told board members in a report
that the cuts may be needed because the district anticipates less
funding from the state and in local tax revenue in fiscal year
2011.
Thompson says positions to be cut would include support staff,
secretaries and custodians, and certified personnel, such as
teachers.
Assistant Superintendent Ron Glover that in addition to cuts in
state funding, jobs may have to be cut because of a drop in sales
and property tax revenues. He says that whatever happens at the
state level, there will be less local money available this year.
