Montgomery Prepares for Selma to Montgomery Events

Montgomery Mayor Todd Strange Thursday provided an update on the city's preparations for the upcoming commemoration of the Selma to Montgomery march.  He says the commemoration is his top priority for now but he is also keeping a close eye on the many candidates who have joined the mayoral race.  Strange says he embraces the challengers and he looks forward to an aggressive campaign in April.  

Mayoral Candidate

Ella Bell has made it official.  She is a candidate for Montgomery mayor.  Bell who currently serves as Vice President of the State School Board, announced her candidacy on the steps of the State Capitol.  Bell becomes the fourth candidate running for mayor of Montgomery.  

Apartment Fire

Montgomery Fire Rescue officials are investigating after one person was killed in an apartment fire Thursday morning.  Firefighters responded to the blaze at Jackson Square Apartments on East South Boulevard Thursday morning.  A fire department spokesman said one person perished in the flames, the deceased victim's name has not been available.  Investigators are trying to determine how the fire started.

Historic Stamp

Tuskegee University is honoring one of the nation's first black architects, Robert Robinson Taylor.  He is the 38th inductee into the Black Heritage Stamp series from the U.S Postal Service.  A dedication was held Thursday at Tuskegee University auditorium.  Taylor is credited with the design and construction of what is now Tuskegee University.  He also helped establish the school's programs in industrial education and building trades.
