By ABI to handle probe into Montgomery police shooting

Montgomery, AL – Montgomery police say an escapee from the city jail was shot and killed Wednesday night. Authorities said officers assigned to a fugitive task force received a tip on the whereabouts of 36-year-old Ricky Walker.
Walker escaped in Dec. 2009 while he was assigned to work release detail. The deceased man was serving a 252 day sentence for various capias warrants.
Captain Keith Barnett, a police spokesman, said officers spotted Walker driving a vehicle on Virginia Loop Road just after 7 p.m.. He said officers used their patrol cars to block Walker's vehicle. Police said that is when Walker put his car in reverse and rammed one of the police cars.
Barnett said Walker was shot when he attempted to run over the officers.
The Alabama Bureau of Investigation is handling the inquiry which is standard procedure when an officer fires his service revolver.
