Montgomery Police Make an Arrest in Traffic Fatality

Montgomery Police have made an arrest in the October 21st traffic death of 31-year-old Nicole Baldwin of Cowarts following an early morning crash on Interstate 85.  Police have charged 28-year-old Wesley Welch of Montgomery with one count of reckless murder.  Welch was the driver of the vehicle in which Baldwin was a passenger.  He was taken into custody in the 2100 block of East South Boulevard.  He was placed in the county jail under a $50,000 bond.  Police say Welch's vehicle was traveling south on I-85 early Wednesday morning when it left the roadway and struck a Dodge Durango, which was unoccupied and parked off the should of the roadway.  Investigators are working to determine the cause of the crash.

Accepting Bribes

Prosecutors say a former correctional officer has pleaded guilty to accepting brides to smuggle tobacco and synthetic marijuana into a federal prison.  U.S. Attorney Joyce White Vance announced Wednesday that 25-year-old Donald D. Johnson pleaded guilty to accepting more than $4000 in bribes.  Johnson made his plea Tuesday.  Johnson, a former cook supervisor, was an employee of the U.S. Bureau of Prison and a public official when he accepted the bribes to smuggle tobacco and K2/Spice, or synthetic marijuana into the Talladega Federal Correctional Institution.
