Montgomery Plans 50th Anniversary Celebration

It soon will be Montgomery's turn in the spotlight for the various events commemorating the 50th anniversary of the voting rights march and the signing of the 1965 Voting Rights Act.  Mayor Todd Strange says he and other city officials learned a few lessons from the massive crowds that descended on Selma earlier this month.

Weekend Accident

A weekend traffic accident claimed the life of a 40-year-old Montgomery man.  Police said Ashley Deloge died early Saturday morning in a single vehicle crash near Interstate 85 South and the Perry Hill Road exit.  The crash happened just after 3:30 a.m. Saturday.  Also, Alabama State Troopers say two people died in separate accidents on Saturday.  In Coosa County, 46-year-old Michael Simmons of Goodwater was killed Saturday afternoon when the motorcycle he was riding struck a tree on Alabama 9, about 3 miles north of Goodwater.  Troopers say a Roanoke woman was killed in a three vehicle crash in Chambers County.  22-year-old Latrice Tucker died Saturday morning in the wreck on U.S. 431, about three miles north of Lafayette.

Selma Shootings

Separate shootings in Selma on Saturday left a man dead and a couple injured.  Selma police say two males are charged with capital murder for killing a 28-year-old man outside his residence on Dallas Avenue.  The shooting occurred just after 10 p.m.  Saturday night, the victim's name was withheld.  Two other gunshot victims, a 41-year-old male and a 37-year-old female, were transported to a Montgomery hospital after they were hit by gunfire while standing outside a bar on Marie Foster Street.  Selma Police said the couple were shot about 11:30 Saturday night.  No arrests were made.

Bank Buyout

Minority-owned New Orleans Liberty Bank has bought First Tuskegee Bank for $60 million.  Liberty Bank and Trust says the bank's first acquisition in Alabama continues 10 years of rapid expansion.  First Tuskegee's website says the bank has two offices in Montgomery and one in Tuskegee, where it was created in 1894 as Tuskegee Cooperative Building and Loan Association.  First Tuskegee President Neill Wright says becoming parts of Liberty Bank will let the bank expand services and get the latest banking technology.
