Repeal Common Core

An Alabama Senate committee is giving approval to a bill that would repeal Common Core standards in Alabama public schools.  The State Senate Committee on Education and Youth Affairs Wednesday morning voted 5-3 in favor of the bill to repeal standards applying to math and English curriculum.  The standards are built into the state's Alabama College and Career Ready Standards.  Proponents say repealing Common Core gives more control to state and local educators.  Opponents say it would put Alabama behind other states and disrupt learning.

Hubbard in Court

Indicted House Speaker Mike Hubbard has been in an Opelika courtroom Wednesday for a potentially key hearing ahead of his October trial on felony ethics charges.  Lee County Circuit Judge Jacob Walker is hearing arguments and testimony on various motions.  Hubbard's defense is seeking to dismiss the case, arguing there was prosecutorial misconduct and that Attorney General Luther Strange did not have the authority to select an acting attorney general when he stepped aside from the case.  Prosecutors say Hubbard has not evidence to support his claims.  They accuse the defense of trying to conduct a wide-ranging fishing expedition by attempting to subpoena multiple member of the attorney general's office.
