Montgomery attorney gets nod for U.S. Attorney

By Ala. congressman picks George Beck for vacant prosecutor post

Montgomery, AL – - Alabama Congressman Artur Davis has a new pick to
become the chief federal prosecutor in Montgomery.
Davis, a Democrat from Birmingham, said Thursday he is backing
Montgomery attorney George Beck for U.S. attorney in Alabama's
middle district. Davis says Beck is one of the top defense lawyers
in the state and should win Senate confirmation.
A committee appointed by Davis originally picked another
Montgomery attorney, Joe Van Heest, for the position. But Davis
said Alabama's two Republican senators objected, and the White
House decided against nominating him for the position.
Davis, who is seeking the Democratic nomination for governor,
says Beck has a bipartisan reputation.
