Montgomery among 4 school systems awarded grant

By Montgomery public schools get $10.5 million grant from state

Montgomery, AL – - Four low-achieving Alabama school
systems have been selected to receive $34.7 million in federal
grant money to turn around their failing schools.
Ten schools in the Lowndes, Marengo, Coosa and Montgomery county
school systems will receive the grants.
The School Improvement Grant funds were awarded to the Alabama
Department of Education by the U.S. Department of Education in late
April.
If schools accept the money, they face stiff requirements that
can include firing the school's principal and at least half the
staff, extending the school day or school year or shutting down the
school entirely. The grants are available for the 2010-11 school
year and are renewable for two years.
