MLK Memorial takes shape on National Mall in DC

By MLK memorial is half-complete, so say organizers

Washington, D.C. – A nearly 30-foot statue of Martin Luther King
Jr. now stands facing the Jefferson Memorial on the National Mall.
The granite sculpture of the King memorial is nearing completion
after the head was put in place just before Thanksgiving. During a
media tour Wednesday, project manager Lisa Anders said the sculptor
hopes to complete the statue by the end of December.
Granite walls at the memorial site are engraved with some of
King's famous quotations from his speeches and writings.
Officials say construction is about half complete.
Harry Johnson, president of the group building the memorial,
says people will be taken aback and proud when they see the
memorial.
A dedication and opening is planned for Aug. 28, 2011.
