Mission: Readiness Combats Obesity Issues

Increasingly, young people in the U.S. and particularly Alabama are too overweight for military service.  To combat this reality, updated nutrition standards have been implemented in schools since 2010 to encourage healthier eating habit.   Mission: Readiness, a group of retired senior military leaders says recent efforts to back off of those standards are misguided.  Retired Master Chief Petty officer of the Navy, Jim Herdt says they are beginning to make a difference.  A new report released by the non-profit organization found that one in three Alabama teenagers is overweight or obese; three out of four adolescents in the state do not get the recommended hour of daily exercise; and more than one in three adults in Montgomery County are obese.

Weekend Killing

Decatur police say four people charged in a weekend killing and robberies apparently chose their victims at random.  The Decatur Daily quotes authorities as saying the suspects apparently sought out people who would be easy targets.  One adult and three teenagers are charged in the death of Antonio Hernadnez.  He was found shot to death in the carport of a home Friday night.  Police say the four may also be involved in the killing of another man whose body was found Saturday morning, but no charges have been filed.  Authorities say the suspects also are believed to be linked to holdups including the robbery of three teenagers at an elementary school playground last week.  Police say the three teenager suspects will be tried as adults.
