By White Hall, AL mayor pleads guilty to theft charge, agrees to leave office
Montgomery, AL – (AP) - White Hall Mayor John Jackson has
pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor theft charge and agreed to resign.
Jackson was charged with felony theft in 2007 for allegedly
stealing more than $46,000 from funds the city received in the sale
of land for an electronic bingo hall on U.S. 80. The Alabama
Attorney General's Office released a statement Monday that Jackson
had pleaded guilty to a lesser misdemeanor charge and agreed to
resign as mayor with three days.
Attorney General Troy King said Jackson also agreed to pay more
than $46,000 in restitution and to not run for public office for
two years. King said sentencing will be Dec. 2.
Jackson did not immediately return telephone messages seeking
comment.
