Low Voter Turnout Predicted, Despite Optimism

Montgomery, Alabama – The polls are open in Montgomery as residents pick the next mayor of the capital city. Election officials are hoping for a larger turnout, but if absentee ballots are any indication, that won't happen.

Montgomery Election Center officials say just shy of 490 absentee ballots were turned in by Friday. While Monday was the final day to turn absentee ballots in, the Montgomery Election Center says it will accept absentee ballots that arrive in the mail by noon today. In the last mayoral election, only 34 percent of registered voters cast ballots.

There are six candidates for mayor: Michael Briddell, Willie Cook, Jon Dow, Jay King, Scott Simmons and Todd Strange.

Polls remain upon until 7:00 p.m.
