A local elementary student has died from the flu, becoming one of 20 pediatric deaths due to influenza nationwide. The third grader was a student at Pike Road School. Superintendent Dr. Charles Ledbetter confirmed with reporters yesterday 8 year old Zainab Momin died Tuesday night at a local hospital. Grief counselors will be provided for students when classes resume on Monday.
The Alabama Department of Public Health released a statement saying it had been notified of a pediatric death related to the flu, but no other details could be made available. It was just last week that Gov. Kay Ivey declared a State Public Health Emergency in response to the crisis presented by the flu. The high volume of cases has caused several schools to close in Alabama and clogged hospital emergency rooms.
