Life without Parole for Montgomery Man

A Lee County jury has recommended life with parole for a Montgomery man convicted in a fatal shooting in 2012 that killed two Auburn football players and a third man.  The jury voted 7-5 Thursday on the sentence for 25-year-old Desmonte Leonard and he's scheduled to be sentenced November 5th by Circuit Judge Jacob Walker.  

Business Burned

A large fire destroyed parts of the Varner Woodwork cabinet company on Norman Bridge Road.  The blaze began shortly before 5 p.m. Thursday sending massive columns of black smoke into the air.  Fire units remained on the scene thru last night putting out hot spots.  No one was injured.  Montgomery District Fire Chief Jon Williams said the fire started in the wood shop behind the business.  He said wood materials and chemical products such as varnish and paint used to make cabinets contributed to the size of the fire.  

Gibson's Visit

The second in command at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs will visit the VA Hospital on Perry Hill Road this afternoon.  Deputy VA Secretary Sloan Gibson will meet with medical center leadership, employees and stakeholders.  Gibson is also scheduled to meet with members of the media.  

Arson Suspect

U.S. Marshals have captured a Montgomery man accused of beating up his girlfriend and burning down her home in June.  Marshals on Wednesday, apprehended 35-year-old Rubin Mack at a motel on West South Boulevard.  Authorities said Mack faces arson, assault, and domestic violence charges.  He is also charged with a federal probation violation.  Authorities said Mack has a history of domestic violence.
