Legislative Issues

Legislators return to the Alabama Statehouse Tuesday.  The abortion issue likely will dominate the lower chamber's agenda.  The Alabama House is scheduled to debate four bills that would add new restrictions on abortion.  In the Alabama Senate this week, a bill is pending in committee that would make it legal to carry a loaded pistol in a vehicle without a concealed carry permit.  The sponsor, GOP Senator Scott Beason of Jefferson County, has said it is unfair for the citizens to have to pay for a Second Amendment right.

Bridge Crossing

The annual Bridge Crossing Jubilee in Selma kicks off this Thursday.  The four day affair will feature nearly 40 events aimed at commemorating the anniversary of the 1965 Bloody Sunday march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge.  Event organizer, Faya Rose Toure says the bridge crossing will serve as a chance for citizens to get re-energized about the fight for equal rights.  The event will include dancing, singing, plays and speeches.

Inmate Violence

Alabama Department of Corrections officials say eight inmates were injured during a fight at the Elmore Correctional Facility.  Corrections spokesman Brian Corbett says the inmates were sent to Jackson Hospital after the fight on Sunday and three were admitted for further treatment.  Details on the extent of the inmates' injuries and the circumstances that led up to the fight weren't immediately available.  The brawl is under investigation.
