Lawyer: Ala prison officials underreport inmate violence

By Attorney says documents show violence rampant at Donaldson prison

Birmingham, AL – - Lawyers for inmates say confidential
records prove Alabama's corrections agency routinely underreports
fights, stabbings, beatings and suicides at a maximum-security
prison.
Sarah Geraghty (GEHR'-ah-tee), an attorney for inmates at
Donaldson prison near Birmingham, said Wednesday that previously
secret reports recently released by the Department of Corrections
show officials have failed to publicly report dozens of violent
attacks.
Those records were released by the department in an inmate
lawsuit claiming Donaldson is overly dangerous because of
widespread violence among prisoners. Geraghty said the numbers
raise questions about conditions in other Alabama prisons.
A prison system spokesman says the agency is working on a
response to the claims.
Correctional officers are backing the prisoners in the lawsuit
over conditions at Donaldson.
