BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - A lawsuit has been filed against a
Birmingham-based coal company accusing it of funding a paramilitary
group in Colombia that allegedly killed 67 people in a reign of
The suit, filed Thursday in federal court in Birmingham, says
victims included union leaders.
The lawsuit is much broader than one filed in March by the
children of three slain Colombian union leaders against Drummond
Company, which operates a large coal mine and railroad in the South
American country. A spokesman for Drummond was not immediately
available for comment.
A similar lawsuit ended in 2007 with a verdict for Drummond.
The plantiffs in the latest suit include family members of
people allegedly killed by a paramilitary group, which allegedly
got funds from Drummond operatives.
