Late Spring Heat Wave

The National Weather Service is urging residents in central and south Alabama to exercise caution because of the extreme heat.  Forecasters have issued a heat advisory for the cities of Tuskegee, Troy, Phenix City and Eufaula.  The hot temperatures and high humidity will combine to produce heat index values exceeding 100 degrees.  Alabama Power is offering tips how to keep your monthly power bill from soaring.  Utility spokesman Mike Jordan says its crucial to keep cool air inside your residence.  More energy saving tips can be found online at Alabamapower.com

Marijuana Plants

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency says agents with the state Bureau of Investigation have seized more than 2,000 marijuana plants at the start of the annual eradication campaign.  The seizures which began last week represent almost half of the total amount of marijuana found in 2014.  Authorities say the summer months mark the beginning of the growing season for marijuana.  An agency spokesman declined to say where the 2,034 pot plants were seized.  

Youth Club Robbery

Thieves have targeted the Boys and Girls Club in the Regency Park neighborhood.  Joe Williams, president of the organization, said the Billy Thames Club off Troy Highway was burglarized twice in a 24-hour period between Saturday and Sunday.  Williams said the culprits stole television monitors, computers and other items.  Thieves also vandalized offices, classrooms, smashed windows and wall and even stole law equipment.  Montgomery police say the break-ins are under investigation.  No arrests have been made.  The Boys and Girls Club of Central Alabama need donations, the number is 286-0900.  

New Candidate

A new candidate has surfaced in the race for the District 2 seat on the Montgomery City Council.  Renee Casillas announced her candidacy on Tuesday.  Three other candidates are also vying for the District 2 seat being vacated by incumbent Charles Smith.  The Montgomery municipal election is set for August 25th.
