Investigation into Possible Murder-Suicide

Local authorities are investing a possible murder-suicide in Montgomery and Wetumpka.  Montgomery Police report that a man told an off-duty officer that he had killed his wife just before taking his own life.  During his confession, the unidentified man told police where to find his wife's body.  She was discovered in the 5100 block of Carmichael Road.  The man's body was later found in Wetumpka.  Montgomery Police have asked the State Bureau of Investigation to handle the case due to its relation to the death investigation in a different jurisdiction.

Griffith for Governor

Does Democratic candidate for governor Parker Griffith have a chance against the incumbent Robert Bentley in the upcoming general election? The advertising from both sides appears to be less pervasive than local races heading into the June Primary.  Adjunct Professor of Political Science from Alabama State University Dr. D'Linell Finely said it all comes down to money.  In early August Governor Bentley had topped $5 million dollars in campaign contributions compared to just over $77,000 dollars for Griffith.  The general election takes place November 4th.

Torchbearer Schools

Six schools, including four from Mobile County, have been recognized in Montgomery for having high-achieving students that come mostly from low-income homes.  The governor and state education officials held a ceremony Wednesday to honor six Alabama Torchbearer schools selected by the state Department of Education.  The schools have at least 80 percent of their students receiving free or reduced-price lunches and score among the top 20 percent in state educational assessments.

ASU Parade of Flags

Several students participated in a parade of flags on the campus of Alabama State University Wednesday.  Each flag was from one of the 42 countries that are represented amongst ASU's faculty, staff and student body.  ASU's United Nations celebration was one of two events held Wednesday as part of the week-long slate of activities for the inauguration of Dr. Gwendolyn E. Boyd.
