Insurance hike turned down for Ala. state workers

By Panel rejects recommendation to hike health premiums

Montgomery, AL – - The board that oversees health insurance
for state employees has rejected a proposed premium increase.
The State Employees Insurance Board on Wednesday turned down a
proposal by state Finance Director Bill Newton to raise the basic
premium for single coverage from $15 to $25 a month and basic
premiums for family coverage from $205 to $225. Some board members
said they don't want to raise premiums unless absolutely necessary.
The board will meet again Sept. 1 to try to develop an operating
plan for the new fiscal year starting Oct. 1.
