Instructional Audits

A series of instructional audits conducted at several Montgomery Public Schools has found management programs, unusual personnel decisions and poor communications.  State School Superintendent Tommy Bice and MPS Margaret Allen shared the information with reporters Thursday.  The instructional audits were ordered after reports surfaced about improper grade changing.  Dr. Bice said he's confident that MPS Superintendent Margaret Allen will correct all the issues cited in the audits. 

Budget Debate

Alabama lawmakers have yet to compromise on a state education budget with time dwindling for this year's legislative session.  A conference committee of House and Senate members met Thursday to try resolving differences between the different versions of the budget passed by the House and Senate.  Senate budget committee Chairman Trip Pittman said funding education employee's health insurance is a concern.  The education budget will be pending when lawmakers return April 1st for their final three meeting days. 

Law Enforcement Honored

Four Montgomery law enforcement officers; a county sheriff's deputy and three Montgomery Police officers were honored Thursday.  Montgomery County Deputy David Alford was honored for pulling a truck driver from a burning tractor-trailer rig last year.  Montgomery Police officers Eddie Moore and Antonio Clark were singled out for their work at the Montgomery City Jail.  Also honored was Montgomery Police Chief of Operations Ron Cook.  He developed the "Good Shepherd" program in which local clergy members accompany officers at crime scenes.  The Officer of the Year awards were presented Thursday at the Montgomery Exchange Club.
