Some Alabama state senators are trying to start a commission to review innocence claims by convicted felons. The Senate Judiciary Committee held a public hearing on the bill Wednesday. The legislation sponsored by Republican Sen. Dick Brewbaker of Pike Road would also put a moratorium on executions until June of 2017. The legislation would create an eight-member Innocence Inquiry Commission. The panel could send cases back to a judge for review if members believe the innocence claim is credible. The bill comes after several high-profile exonerations in the state.
