Horrific Accident Claims Four Lives

Authorities say a car full of teenagers collided head-on with a police car in Elmore County last night, killing three teens and a sheriff's deputy.  Elmore County Sheriff Bill Franklin said the crash happened around 7:45 p.m. on Firetower Road about four miles east of Wetumpka.  Authorities say a car driven by 16-year-old Austin Ryan Augustine collided with a cruiser being driven by Deputy James Bart Hart.  Both drivers were killed along with two passengers, identified as 16-year-old Dylan Bieber and 16-year-old Hoyt Hardin.  A third passenger, 16-year-old Nicholas Benjamin was taken to the a hospital with life-threatening injuries.  It wasn't immediately clear what caused the crash.  The deputy was on patrol and had just responded to an accident involving a deer.

Gibson Visit

Deputy Secretary of Veterans Affairs Sloan Gibson made a return visit to the Central Alabama Veterans Health Care System Monday.  He met with employees at both the Tuskegee and Montgomery campuses.  Gibson says pockets of improvement are evident, but veterans are still waiting too long.  Gibson was last in Montgomery, October 10th.  He says since that time, 54 new employees have been hired, including 31 medical support assistants.

Gun Control

Twenty-one states including Alabama are asking a federal appeals court to overturn provisions of Maryland's gun-control law that ban 45 assault weapons and limit gun magazines to 10 rounds.  West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey led the coalition in filing a friend of the court brief in the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Richmond, Virginia, last week.  The brief says the law violates the Second Amendment right to keep firearms in homes for self-protection.  A U.S. District Court judge in Baltimore upheld the provisions in August.  The state of Maryland has until Dec. 31 to respond to the filing.
