Historic Apartment Vandalized

An apartment where civil rights icon Rosa Parks once lived was ransacked and vandalized sometime over the weekend.  According to Montgomery Police, the apartment was among several units that were vandalized between late Friday night and early Monday morning.  The apartments are located in the Cleveland Housing Community on Rosa Parks Avenue.  Police believe the thieves were looking for cooper to re-sell.  Central Alabama CrimeStoppers is offering a $1,000 reward for information in the case.  In 2001, Rosa Parks' apartment was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. 

Child Recovering

A child sustained life-threatening injuries Monday afternoon after the juvenile was struck by a vehicle.  Montgomery Police said the youngster was hit about 3 p.m. at the intersection of Atlanta Highway and Federal Drive.  No charges were filed against the driver.  The unnamed juvenile's medical condition has not been available.  Witnesses said the youngster, who is believed to be a student at Capitol Heights Middle School, tried to cross the busy street as traffic was moving. 

Inmate Dies

An inmate on Alabama's death row was found dead in his cell Monday.  A state Corrections Department official said an initial inquiry determined that 26-year-old Justin Hosch died from an apparent suicide.  Court records showed that Hosch had been sentenced to died out of Autauga County in October in 2010 for killing the owner of an auto repair shop in Pine Level two years earlier.  Authorities said Hosch had escaped from a youth facility in Deatsville prior to the killing of 49-year-old Joel Willmore. 

Clayton's Court Appearance

A Millbrook man charged in the death of his mother made his first court appearance Monday in Elmore County District Court.  A judge set a $250,000 bond for 27-year-old Sedrick Clayton.  He remains in the Elmore County Jail awaiting a preliminary hearing.  In a related development, Millbrook Police Chief P.K. Johnson said an autopsy confirmed that a body found in a wooded area Saturday was identified as 49-year-old Anita Washington.  The Deatsville woman had been reported missing last week.
