Healthcare Open Enrollment Starts Soon

Open enrollment for the Affordable Care Act begins next month.  An updated version of Healthcare.gov has also rolled out, it features a streamline application process and mobile device access.  Montgomery Field Navigator, Monette Harrison says free help is available to those seeking healthcare.  Information about scheduling appointments and volunteer opportunities are available at alaenroll.com ore enrollmontgomery@gmail.com.  The enrollment period begins November 15th and ends February 15th.  

Gibson's Montgomery Visit

Veterans Affairs Deputy Secretary Sloan Gibson was in the capital city Friday visiting the Central Alabama Veterans Health Care System.  Gibson said he wanted to meet the CAVCHS employees and to assess the problem areas at the center.  Secretary Gibson cites may issues within the system that he believes stem from a lack of effective and long-term leadership.  Gibson says his team is working diligently to hire the right permanent leadership, revamp the human resources practices and improve overall accountability of the organization.  

GEAR-UP

Low-income students in Alabama's Black Belt will be getting an assist in preparing and succeeding in postsecondary education.  Nearly 50 million dollars in grants and matching funds will be distributed to various programs geared toward helping these students become college and career ready.  Felicia Jones is the Executive Director of the Black Belt Community Foundation.  The Foundation is one of several project partners involved in GEAR-Up, which stands for Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs.  

Motorist Pleads Guilty

A Montgomery man has admitted he was the driver that caused a crash in north Montgomery one year ago that left a young woman dead.  Court records show that 29-year-old Kevin Crosskey of Montgomery recently entered a guilty plea to murder and first-degree assault in connection with an October 2013 crash on Yarbrough Street in north Montgomery.  Prosecutors said a car driven by Crosskey crashed into a parked vehicle where 25-year-old Ashlee Mock and Jeremy Gaines were standing.  Mock was killed and Gaines was seriously injured.  Crosskey will be sentenced at the end of the month.
