Gubernatorial candidates vary on gambling issue

By Ala. gubernatorial hopefuls hold various views on gambling

Montgomery, AL – - The candidates trying to become
Alabama's next governor have views on electronic bingo that run the
entire spectrum.
Democratic Agriculture Commissioner Ron Sparks said any county
that wants to approve gambling should have it. Democratic U.S. Rep.
Artur Davis said he favors a statewide referendum on whether
electronic bingo is legal.
So do two Republican candidates, former state agency director
Bill Johnson and state Rep. Robert Bentley.
Among other Republicans, former Chancellor Bradley Byrne would
continue Gov. Bob Riley's efforts to shut down electronic bingo.
Former Chief Judge Roy Moore says electronic bingo is an attempt to
subvert the anti-lottery provisions of the state constitution.
State Treasurer Kay Ivey calls electronic bingo "fool's gold."
And Greenville businessman Tim James says electronic bingo is
another name for illegal gambling.
