Gov. signs general fund, education budgets

By Ala budgets are signed into law by Gov. Riley

Montgomery, AL – - Gov. Bob Riley is signing both state
budgets passed by the Alabama Legislature without any changes.
Riley signed the nearly $1.6 billion General Fund budget into
law on Wednesday. The governor told reporters Thursday that he will
also sign the nearly $5.5 billion education budget.
Both budgets will take effect Oct. 1. The General Fund budget
maintains Medicaid services and the Children's Health Insurance
Program, but it cuts some other state programs. The education
budget keeps the same number of state-funded teaching positions,
but it cuts money for textbooks and school supplies.
