GEAR-UP Event Held at ASU

Several representatives from colleges and schools across the state gathered at Alabama State University Wednesday for the kick-off celebration of the GEAR-UP grant.  The grant, called Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs, seeks to better prepare students in the Black Belt for post-secondary education.  Wednesday's event provided grant partners an opportunity to share information and implementation strategies.  

Biscuits Honored

After reaching three million fans last year, Montgomery Biscuits Baseball is the recipient of another honor this year, it's called the Bob Freitas Award; it's for outstanding minor league operation at the Double A level.  The award recognizes minor league organizations that demonstrate at least five years of successful operation and community involvement.  Montgomery is the second team in Alabama to win the award in the last ten years.  

Disaster Loans

The U.S. Small Business Administration says disaster loans are available in 12 Alabama counties due to a drought this fall.  The agriculture disaster declaration covers Chambers, Chilton, Clay, Cleburne, Coosa, Elmore, Lee, Macon, Randolph, Shelby, Talladega and Tallapoosa counties.  The Small Business Administration says the loans are available to small businesses, small agricultural cooperatives, small businesses involved in aquaculture and most private non-profit organizations.  The loans can be up to $2 million dollars.  

ASU Tree Lighting

Alabama State University held its annual Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony Wednesday afternoon. Students joined ASU President Dr. Gwendolyn Boyd to place ornaments on the tree at the Bibb Graves Hall Plaza on South Jackson Street.  Holiday music was performed by the ASU Choir and the Mighty Marching Hornets Band.
