Montgomery, Alabama – The State Personnel Board says layoffs appear to be the only solution for state agencies which are dealing with budget cuts.
This from State personnel Director Jackie Graham after a legislative committee blocked a plan that would have furloughed state employees for up to 24 days a year.
The governor has ordered most state agencies to try to cut spending by 10 percent because of a decline in state tax collections.
Alabama State Employees Association officials argue that neither furlough nor layoffs are necessary.
