Frigid Temperatures Blanket Alabama

Temperatures will continue to plunge as through the rest of the week.  Forecasters say frigid temperatures will impact the eastern two-thirds of the nation, including the South.  The arctic air is expected to pack quite a punch with wind chill values throughout Alabama ranging between minus 5 and 7 degrees Thursday morning.  Temperatures are projected to hit the teens and possibly single digits in many areas of central and north Alabama.

Suspect Released

The suspect arrested and charged in connection to Montgomery's first homicide of 2015 is back on the streets.  According to court documents 25-year-old Dwight Williams of Montgomery, was released Monday on a $75,000 bond.  Williams is charged in the death of 42-year-old Preston Fort, who was shot to death less than an hour into the New Year.  Police say their initial investigation indicates Fort was shot following a dispute.

Prison Task Force

An Alabama task force will consider solutions this month to help relieve severe overcrowding in state prisons.  Committee members say the ideas will likely include changes to sentencing guidelines, building new structures to house inmates and increased resources for probation and parole.  Alabama has the fourth highest incarceration rate in the nation.
