Former Montgomery Police Chief Drue Lackey has Died

Former Montgomery Police Chief Drue Hiriam Lackey has died at the age of 90.  According to his obituary, Lackey died Sunday. He is best known for fingerprinting Rosa Parks after she was arrested in 1955 for refusing to give up her seat to a white person on a Montgomery bus. He also was there when Martin Luther King Jr. was arrested for disobeying Alabama’s segregation laws. Lackey joined the Montgomery police department in 1948 and served as its chief from 1967 until his retirement in 1970. Lackey wrote a book about his experiences called “Another View of the Civil Rights Movement.”  Visitations are set for Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Leak Memory Chapel and Friday at noon at Frazer United Methodist Church. A memorial service will follow – also at Frazer at 2 o’clock.
