Former AEA Leader Dead at 78

One of Alabama's most powerful political figures died Tuesday at a Montgomery hospital.  Paul Hubbert led the Alabama Education Association for more than four decades.  He was 78.  A spokeswoman for AEA said Hubbert was hospitalized October 6th after a fall and died from complications.  Dr. Joe Reed served as the associate executive secretary of AEA.  He said Hubbert was a relentless advocated for teachers and public education.  Funeral arrangement for Paul Hubbert have not been finalized.  

Montgomery's 28th Homicide

A fatal shooting on Mount Meigs Road is under investigation.  Montgomery police say 36-year-old Charlie McCord was shot just after noon Tuesday in the 1500 block of Mount Meigs Road.  Police said the victim died at a local hospital.  MPD said detectives are trying to determine the motive and no arrests have been made.  It was the city's 28th homicide this year.  

Ousted Pastor

A Montgomery church has gone to court to force out a pastor accused of having sex with congregation members while infected with AIDS.  Church officials at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church say the pastor, Juan McFarland, confessed during sermons and seized control of bank accounts after he was voted out.  The lawsuit, filed Tuesday in Montgomery Circuit Court, also accuses McFarland of misappropriating church funds and using illegal drugs.  

Officer Hubbard Speaks

Montgomery Police Officer Robert Hubbard spoke to the media Tuesday in the Chilton County Commission Chambers.  Hubbard is recovering from gunshot wounds he sustained on October 5th while attempting to apprehend a theft suspect at a Walmart store on East Boulevard.  Hubbard and his wife, Stephanie discussed his recovery and described their family's emotions in the aftermath of the shooting.  The suspect accused of shooting officer Hubbard remains incarcerated in LaSalle Parish, Louisiana.  Montgomery Public Safety officials say they are working to extradite 31-year-old Lawrence Wright to Montgomery.  

Arson Case

Investigators with the Montgomery Fire Department are looking for a Montgomery man wanted for questioning in an arson case.  CrimeStoppers is requesting the public's help in locating 33-year-old Orlando Jervon Gholar.  He's being sought in connection with a September 22nd house fire on Crouson Street.  Montgomery Fire-Rescue said the dwelling was heavily damaged and was ruled to be intentionally set.  The CrimeStoppers number is 215-STOP.  Your tip may lead to a cash award.
