Flood Warnings

A day after torrential rainfall fell across much of Alabama, emergency management officials have been warning residents about flooding.  Several rivers, creeks and streams have begun or are expected to spill their banks through Friday.  Flood warnings continue for the Alabama rivers near Millers Ferry Dam and near Claiborne Dam.  High waters will also impact the Tombigbee and Chattahoochee rivers.  Autauga County, EMA Director Ernie Bagget has urged residents living near the Alabama River to evacuate.

Meth Lab Ruling

Attorney General Luther Strange says the Alabama Supreme Court has issued a groundbreaking ruling in a case involving a methamphetamine lab.  The court on Friday ruled that Montgomery Police properly entered an apartment without a warrant after smelling what they knew from their training was the odor of a meth lab.  The court said the officers' search of the apartment was proper because the lab posed a potential danger to the officers and to the public.  Strange says this is the first case where the state's highest court has addressed the danger posed by meth labs and the need for law enforcement to react quickly.

A fundraising campaign by Montgomery's Brantwood Children's Home is underway.  The agency currently cares for 32 abused or neglected children and teens.  The Daniel Foundation of Alabama has issued a challenge, they will match money raised up to $15,000.  April 30th is the deadline for donations.  Online donations will be accepted at brantwoodchildrenshome.org.

Sewell Requests Investigation

Alabama Congresswoman Terri Sewell is getting involved in the recent raids conducted at Greene County casinos.  Al.com reports that Sewell has written a letter to U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder and asked for a Justice Department investigation to determine if the voting rights of Greene County residents were violated.  Sewell, who represents Alabama's 7th District that includes Greene County said in a statement that she is concerned that the April 7th gambling raids were politically motivated.  Sewell contends the residents of Greene County approved a constitutional amendment in 2003 that authorized electronic bingo.
