Financial irregularities prompt SCLC to dismisses two officials

By Missing money leads to ouster of SCLC officials

Montgomery, AL – - Insider memos suggest two officials dismissed
from the Southern Christian Leadership Conference last month may
have diverted some $569,000 of the civil rights group's money to
bank accounts they controlled.
Officials announced Dec. 21 the removal of the SCLC's chairman,
the Rev. Raleigh Trammell of Dayton, Ohio, and its treasurer, the
Rev. Spiver Gordon of Eutaw, Ala.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution says it has uncovered documents
showing the men are accused of writing checks to themselves, paying
for funeral expenses and credit card and insurance bills and
sending money to their individual chapters - all without board
approval.
A spokeswoman for the Atlanta-based civil rights group did not
immediately return a phone call from The Associated Press Thursday.
