Feds conclude Ala. truck driver distracted in 2010 crash

By NTSB: Ala. trucker on phone at time of fatal Ky. crash

Louisville, Ky. – Federal officials say an Alabama truck
driver was distracted by his cell phone before a 2010 truck crash
that killed him and 10 others in Kentucky.
Investigators at a National Transportation Safety Board hearing
in Washington Tuesday said that 45-year-old Kenneth Laymon of
Jasper had just made an outgoing call that lasted one second before
the March 26th crash on Interstate 65 near Munfordville, Ky.
Laymon's truck crossed the median and struck a van carrying a
Mennonite family and friends to a wedding in Iowa.
Laymon and 10 people in the van died in the fiery crash. Two
young children in safety seats survived.
The NTSB concluded the driver was fatigued at the time of the
accident, which may have contributed to his distraction.
