Faulkner University JV Football Player Fatally Shot

A Faulkner University junior varsity football player was fatally shot during an attempted robbery in Montgomery Wednesday night.  Detectives say four Faulkner University student-athletes were attempting to commit a robbery in the 5900 block of Woodmere Boulevard when the homeowner shot 19-year-old Ryan Brooks of Chelsea in self-defense.  By law, anyone involved in perpetuating a crime when someone is killed, will be charged with murder.  Therefore, the three student-athletes who were with Brooks at the time have been charged.  They have be identified as Marshall Wall and Ronnie Williams of Loxley and Tobias Russell of Alexander City.  The 19-year-olds are being held on $75,000 bond.  The homeowner's identity hasn't been released.

Parkway Accident

The wreck Thursday morning on the Alabama River Parkway claimed the life of a Montgomery man.  State Troopers are reporting that 62-year-old Tony Leon Dennis died in the crash when his SUV ran off the road and struck an embankment.  It happened about 2:15 approximately one and a half miles west of Montgomery.  The victim was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the vehicle during the crash.

Hubbard's Request

State prosecutors have asked a judge to deny indicted House Speaker Mike Hubbard's request for information about conversations between reporters and employees of the attorney generals' office.  Hubbard's defense team last month asked prosecutors to produce any written or recorded conversations between members of the media and any members of the attorney general's office.  The defense asked for the names of people involved in the calls and the purpose of the conversations.  Prosecutors wrote in a motion filed Tuesday that Hubbard had failed to say why he needs the records.  A grand jury in October indicted Hubbard on multiple felony ethics charges, accusing him of using his public position to benefit himself and his companies.  He has pleaded not guilty.

State Tree

The official state Christmas tee is scheduled for lighting today on the steps of the Alabama Capitol.  Governor Robert Bentley will lead the ceremony that beings at 5:45 p.m.  The state's official Christmas tree this year is 38-foot Eastern Red Cedar grown in Bullock County.  It is decorated with approximately forty thousand LED lights.  The theme of this year's ceremony is, "Every light a prayer for peace."  Montgomery Mayor Todd Strange and Adjutant General Perry Smith of the Alabama National Guard will offer a special tribute to the troops.
