Alabama prison officials are investigating the fatal stabbing of a prison inmate.  The Department of Corrections says 67-year-old Lawrence Utley was killed by another inmate at about 6 a.m.  Wednesday morning at the Holman Correctional Facility in Atmore.  It was the second fatal stabbing at a state prison this month.  A 29-year-old inmate was stabbed to death on April 15th at Staton Prison in Elmore.

Simpson Arrest

U.S. Marshals have arrested a Selma man wanted for capital murder during a 2013 robbery attempt.  27-year-old Justin Simpson was arrested Tuesday in Birmingham after eluding authorities.  Dallas County District Attorney Michael Jackson says Simpson was wanted for the December 2013 robbery and shooting death of 77-year-old Willie "Dusty" Berry.  Simpson and another male tried to rob Berry.  The victim shot Simpson's partner killing him.  The district attorney said Simpson faces two counts of capital murder and other charges.

Adoption Bill

A House Committee voted 6-4 Wednesday for a bill that would allow private adoption agencies to turn away gay couples on religious grounds.  The bill says groups could not be forced to participate in adoptions and foster care placements that violate their religious beliefs.  Opponents said it could legalize a broad range of discrimination in the name of religion.  The bill does not mention homosexuality, but proponents said it is in anticipation of legalized same-sex marriage.

VA Construction

Alabama Congresswoman Martha Roby says the Veterans Affairs committee has approved several construction projects and program for military families and veterans in Alabama.  The Second District Montgomery Republican said the committee approved more than $80 million to build new elementary schools on Maxwell Air Force Base and Fort Rucker.  Another $7.6 million would be spent to build a new squadron operations facility for the Air National Guard at Dannelly Field.
