Fatal Crash in Lowndes County

Alabama state Troopers say a man and a teenager were killed in a motorcycle crash in Lowndes County during the long Independence Day holiday weekend.  A statement from the State Department of Public Safety reports that 21-year-old Jeffrey Sawyer and 13-year-old Zachary Smith, both of Greenville, died Saturday night when the motorcycles they were riding collided on Goldsmith Road near Whitehall.  The two weren't wearing helmets.  Troopers say the crash remains under investigation. 

Prattville Death

A boy who was struck by a vehicle in Prattville Thursday night passed away Saturday morning.  Police say the 9-year-old was hit while riding his bike on Wetumpka Street near Prattville Baptist Hospital a little after 8:30 p.m.  He was eventually taken to Children's Hospital in Birmingham where he was pronounced dead at 11:15 a.m. Saturday.  No other details have been released. 

McDonald Remembered

Former State Senator and Agriculture Commissioner Albert McDonald of Huntsville died Sunday.  An Al.come story reports that McDonald was a cotton farmer before going into politics.  He served two terms in the Alabama State Senate representing District 6.  He served as Alabama's Commissioner of Agriculture and Industries from 1983-1991 and was appointed by President George W. Bush to serve as State Director of the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Farm Services Agency.  He was 83-year-old.

Bentley's Executive Order

Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley is scheduled to sign an executive order honoring members of the state's Army and Air National Guards today.  Bentley will sign the order creating the Alabama Honor Guard Ribbon this afternoon in the Old House Chamber of the State Capitol.  The executive order recognizes the service of the Alabama Army and Air National Guard Funeral Honor Guards team members.  The funeral honor guards are responsible for performing military ceremonies during funeral for eligible veterans.  The honors usually include the folding and presentation of an American flag to the next of kin and the playing of Taps.
