Fair Ballot Commission

Five proposed constitutional amendments will be on Alabama's ballot November 4th, and for the first time, a commission has written ballot language to describe them in plain words.  The chairman of the new Fair Ballot Commission, Will Sellers, says the Legislature created the commission because wording on the ballot was sometimes written in legal or technical terms and was confusing.  He still recommends reading the summaries before arriving at the polls.  The entire summaries are at least a page each and will be available at voting precincts, but will not be printed in their entirety on the ballot.

Fuller Enters Program

A federal judge from Alabama will be allowed to enter a court program to resolve a misdemeanor battery case against him that involved allegations he struck his wife during a fight at an Atlanta hotel.  U.S. District Court Judge Mark Fuller will spend up to 24 weeks in a domestic violence intervention program and undergo an alcohol and substance abuse assessment.  If Fuller completes the program, the case against him will be dismissed.

Razors in Prison

Advocacy groups say Alabama prisons are giving inmates virtually unlimited access to razors, a practice that's leading to deaths and injuries inside the lockups.  The Southern Poverty Law Center and the Alabama Disabilities Advocacy Program asked a court to bar prisons from freely distributing razor blades to male inmates.  The groups are making the request on behalf of prisoners who've tried to kill themselves using the razors.  The prison system has filed court documents saying it's trying to correct the issue.
