Elderly Woman Dies in Two-Vehicle Accident

Montgomery Police are investigating a fatal accident that occurred Wednesday evening.  The two-vehicle crash happened on U.S. Highway 80 near Alatex Road.  It involved an 18 wheeler and a passenger vehicle.  Police say 81-year-old Bertha Britt of Hayneville, the driver of the passenger vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene.  

EAT South

Mayor Todd Strange held a media briefing Thursday at City Hall.  One of his topics included plans for EAT South Downtown Farm.  Liz Ellerson, Interium Executive Director for the program says for the next two to three months they will be working on projects to further develop the downtown farm.  EAT South manages the only urban farm in downtown Montgomery which lies below Overlook Park and along the Alabama River.  Produce grown at the farm is sold throughout the city to improve access to fresh, healthy food and provide income for EAT South.  

Tax Credit Plan

Democratic Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton rolled out a plan this week to boost manufacturing in the United States.  Among other things, it would create a new tax credit for area suffering from manufacturing job losses.  Alabama Congresswoman Terri Sewell says the plan would offer investors a 39 percent credit on equity investments over a seven year period.  Sewell points to Alabama's automobile manufacturing as a sector that could benefit from the plan.  She notes that 14 plants in the state have either closed or cut personnel since the beginning of the year.  

Voter Restoration Summit

An Expungement and Voter Rights Restoration Summit will be held this Saturday in Montgomery.  The free event is organized by members of the Montgomery Alumni Chapter of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.  Participants are asked to bring in criminal records, including juvenile and adult for free assistance from volunteer attorneys.  A panel discussion titled, "Return to Society: Restoring the Right to Vote for Ex-Felon" will feature Representative Christopher England and Montgomery County Probate Judge Steven Reed.  The summit will be held at Carver High School on West Fairview Avenue from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
