Davis Ponders Run for Mayor

Former Congressman and Montgomery native Artur Davis is considering a move back to the Capital city and possibly running for mayor next year.  Davis has told Al.com that he has been talking to old friends about Montgomery's future and will have something specific to say in the coming weeks.  Davis said local government is the one place where elected officials have a chance to get something done.  Davis served eight years in Congress representing Alabama's 7th District.  He lost the 2010 Democratic Primary for governor.

Webber Restoration

An engineering firm says restoration work has resumed on the Webber building in downtown Montgomery.  The historic structure partially collapsed last Thursday.  An executive with Design Build South says steel beams and concrete blocks will be installed to support the roof of the 150 year old building to prevent any further collapse.  Montgomery city officials said several streets are closed but will reopen later this week.

ADPH Letters

The Alabama Department of Public Health has begun sending letters to individuals whose identities may have been taken from department records.  According to federal prosecutors in Montgomery,  patient information may have been used in a tax fraud operation in Alabama and Georgia.  A federal grand jury recently indicted 10 individuals in both states.  The health department said anyone receiving a letter who suspects they are a victim should fill out a form and sent it with supporting documentation to the U.S. Attorney's Office in Montgomery.

Auburn Mourns Lutzenkirchen

Georgia state police says former Auburn University football star was killed in a one-car crash in western Georgia.  23-year-old Philip Lutzenkirchen was ejected from an SUV when it overturned several times near LaGrange, Georgia early Sunday morning.  Investigators say 22- year-old Joseph Ian Davis was driving and was partially ejected from the vehicle.  Authorities say blood was drawn from Davis to determine whether alcohol was a factor in the crash.  Two other passengers were also injured.  Lutzenkirchen played on Auburn's 2011 national championship team.

Disaster Relief Deadline

The Federal Emergency Management Agency has extended the deadline until July 15th for Alabama residents to register for assistance if they were affected by the severe storms, tornadoes and flooding that hit the state in late April.  State EMA Director Art Faulkner said the governor requested a two-week extension and FEMA approved it.  The deadline for loan applications to the Small Business Administration has also been extended to July 15th.
