Cool July Temperatures

Temperatures have cooled off to near record territory for this time of year again.  Because of the cooler than usual July, many people are thinking Alabama will experience an especially hot August.  National Weather Service Meteorologist Holly Allen says that's not necessarily so, she says a massive weather system in Southeastern Canada and the Great Lakes region is causing the cooler air to push farther south.  She predicts a return to more normal temperatures by early next week, if not sooner.

Suspect Captured

A nationwide search has ended for a south Alabama man accused of sexually assaulting a young mother and her 8-year-old daughter in Ozark.  Authorities say 44-year-old David Pitts was captured Monday evening while being treated at a hospital in West Palm Beach, Florida.  Pitts is accused of kidnapping a 30-year-old woman and her daughter from their Ozark home last Thursday.  Ozark Police said Pitts took them to a secluded area and sexually battered the woman and then molested the child.  Pitts is facing an array of criminal charges.  He awaits extradition to Alabama.

Suspicious Fire

A family in Wilcox County is mourning the death of a loved one who perished in a fire that gutted a mobile home early Sunday morning.  The state Fire Marshal's Office said 58-year-old Patricia Nickelson died in the blaze on Morgan Road in Camden.  The fire erupted around 3:30 a.m. Sunday.  The victim's boyfriend escaped the flames and Wilcox County Sheriff Earnest Evans said the male, whose name was withheld, was taken into custody on unrelated charges.  The state Fire Marshal has not determined how the blaze started.
