Congressional Gold Medal Bill

Two members of Alabama's congressional delegation have introduced legislation to award the Congressional Gold Medal to civil rights  marchers who walked from Selma to Montgomery in March 1965 to achieve the right to vote.  Democrat Terri Sewell of Birmingham and Republican Martha Roby of Montgomery are co-sponsoring the legislation that was introduced Wednesday in the U.S. House.  This year will mark the 50th anniversary of Bloody Sunday and the 50 Mile March.  The Congressional Gold Medal is the nation's highest civilian honor.

Higher Bonds

Montgomery County's top prosecutor says he's tired of murder suspects getting out of jail because of low bonds.  District Attorney Darryl Bailey tells Al.com that his office will ask judges to set bail for murder suspects at a minimum of $150,000.  Under Alabama law, a judge cannot set bail in a homicide case higher than $75,000.  The bond schedule has been on the books for two decades.  Wednesday, Montgomery County prosecutors persuaded a judge to set bail at $250,000 for a Montgomery man charged in connection with a fatal shooting that occurred Tuesday afternoon in west Montgomery.

Toaster Oven

A Montgomery Fire Rescue official says a toaster oven was the cause behind last Friday's fire that killed two children and left a third child critically injured.  Fire Department District Chief James Petrey said the toaster oven was being used to heat a bedroom and was placed too close to combustible materials.  A candlelight vigil is planned for the children tonight at 7 p.m. at the home on Alexander Street.

Cat Food Recall

A nationwide recall has been issued for Purr Complete Feline Poultry meal because it has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella.  The Alabama Department of Agriculture is conducting recall effectiveness checks to make sure the product is being or has been removed from store shelves.  If your pet has consumed the recalled product, contact a veterinarian.  Consumers who purchased the Purr Feline Poultry Meal are urged to return the cat food for a full refund.
