It was 60 years ago Tuesday that Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on a segregated city bus to a white man, sparking the Montgomery Bus Boycott. Numerous events have marked the occasion Tuesday including a program at the Dexter Avenue King Memorial Baptist Church emphasizing the role lawyers played in the boycott. The man who represented Rosa Parks, Fred Gray spoke at the occasion. Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton acted as keynote speaker for the event. Clinton listed mass incarceration, an epidemic of gun violence and attempts to roll back voting rights among the injustices African-Americans face.
Prostitution Ring
Three men accused of running a prostitution ring that included women living in the country illegally have been indicted. Federal prosecutors said Tuesday that the three are accused of running a Montgomery-based prostitution ring.
Rate Reduction
The Alabama Public Service Commission has approved reductions in electricity rates for residential and business customers. The PSC voted unanimously Tuesday to reduce Alabama Power Company rates by $120 million. The three-member PSC also approved a reduction of nearly $23 million in rates for customers of Alabama Gas Corporation.
